Match recap vs. Taylor 4/17

Hello to all Lady Tiger Tennis fans!

 

You’re hearing from an excited coach tonight. I am so excited for the girls. They got the taste of winning at the Varsity level, and it was so sweet. The Junior Varsity is undefeated at 3-0. It’s just getting better. Well we are officially half way through our season (haha) but it still feels more like we are just getting started. I am encouraging the girls to stay mentally tough, as we have a lot to accomplish in four short weeks. Our conference season started tonight, so we are 1-0 both Varsity and JV. Hamilton Heights is a conference match as well, tomorrow. Thanks for all the parent/grandparent support tonight. I know it means a lot to the girls when we can make it. On to the match recaps!

 

Emily Harshman played a nice player tonight. Once she focused in, cut down on errors, and hit high percentage shots, the match was hers. 7-5, 6-2 was the final score!

 

Alexis Hungate played an opponent that was a backboard. I was proud of Ali for being aggressive with that kind of opponent, taking the net, and really putting her volleys away. Ali spent a lot of time working on that in the off season, and it paid off. Score- 6-2, 6-1.

 

Megan Floyd stepped in to Varsity play for the first time in her high school tennis career. Although she didn’t get the win, I think she learned a lot about what it takes to get to that next level. Getting out of no-man’s land and using your whole body into your shots. I am proud of her effort and good attitude. Score- 3-6, 2-6.

 

Sydney Wells and Madison Wells blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. It tells a lot about their ability to put the pedal to the metal and not let up. Even good players still have let downs, but I didn’t really see any out of these two tonight.

 

In the same fashion, number two doubles, Gabriella Matly and Erica Plutat shut out their opponent 6-0, 6-0. It was exciting to watch these two get their first win together. I thought net play improved, as did their communication! Varsity Record is 1-2. Conference Record is 1-0.

 

Junior Varsity scores:

Dulce Amayun at 1 Singles- 8-0    Wow, what an improvement I have seen out of Dulce this year. She is learning how to temper the power she has with control. I enjoy watching her intense nature on the court.

 

Jenna Miller at 2 Singles- 8-1        Jenna transitioned nicely into singles tonight. She found her placement on the court and had nice rallies. I think she is getting any first couple match jitters out of the way and is coming out strong.

 

Marlee Thomas at 3 Singles- 8-2  Marlee is a born singles player. The hustle on the court is awesome. Her forehand is improving leaps and bounds and her backhand is following more slowly, but will get there.

 

Kaley Hopper and Rachel Baker at 1 Doubles- 8-2 These two continue to impress me. Both are so positive and encouraging to each other. They also challenge one another to get better. It is fun to watch both of them develop. Communication is a huge plus for both of them.

 

Lydia Wallace and Brooke Hardin at 2 Doubles- 8-3             The two of them stepped into regular J/V play tonight and came out with a win. I see strong potential in both of them, as they continue to figure the fundamentals out. Serves are much improved and groundstrokes are getting there. They work very well together, and show how badly they want to get the win for their team!

 

Anna Ortmann and Addison Morgan at Exhibition Doubles- 6-3       These two came out ready to fight tonight. Anna’s serves are really coming along and I saw Addison looking dynamite at the net. These two freshman are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the not too distant future!

We missed Georgia Williamson and Kady Whitehead, who were both out due to illness. Get better quickly ladies!

 

Thanks to Coach Woods, Coach Bousum and manager Ethan for all your work too! It was also awesome to see Coach Bobby out for the first time tonight. Bobby Mize was my assistant coach in high school, and I invite him out each season to help out once it warms up! We appreciate his willingness to volunteer his time.

Match recap from Logansport 4/15/2013

Once again, facing light rain, the Tigers played their second tennis match of the season. The temperature was, however, about 20 degrees higher than the last one! Haha

We lost the overall Varsity match 1-4, but there were several good things to take from the match. We can see the caliber of play that is needed to achieve sectional and conference titles. We are not currently at that level, but it is a level Northwestern can achieve. We will see how we can improve throughout the season! I am proud of the girls, regardless of the score, because they gave their effort, had no excuses, and fought with their heads held high. Now the recap of matches: Emily Harshman, Alexis Hungate, and Georgia Williamson lost with identical 0-6, 1-6 scores. Sydney Wells and Madison Wells were the lone point on the Varsity squad. With improved communication, net play, and consistency, they were able to come out on top of a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 match! Erica Plutat and Gabriella did the best they could, but they ended up on the losing side of a 2-6, 1-6 decision. This puts the Varsity record at 0-2.

 

The Junior Varsity match was exciting to watch, as the Tigers came out on top 5-0. Fundamentals are continuing to improve and the girls are feeling more confident now that everyone has a match (or two) completed. Megan Floyd won 8-4. Kady Whitehead had a matching 8-4 score. Marlee Thomas won 8-3. Jenna Miller and Dulce Amayun won 8-4. Kaley Hopper and Rachel Baker blanked their opponents 8-0. In exhibition play, Lydia Wallace and Brooke Hardin won their first match 6-2. Anna Ortman and Addison lost 3-6, but got their feet wet, in their first match of the season! Junior Varsity is 2-0 on the season.

Match recap- Northfield

Wow, what a night last night. The girls were real troopers. With the wind chill down in the mid thirties, a steady light rain, and crazy wind, we played our first match last night. When we got there, even this coach, (who is typically not scared away by bad weather) thought it was a little ridiculous to be playing in these conditions. The home coach thought we would be fine, and I give her props for being crazier than I am. J But, on to the tennis. The Varsity girls fought hard, but came out on the short end. Emily lost a tough match 2-6, 2-6. Fought hard, but unforced errors and a tough opponent got the best of her. Alexis Hungate lost a great first set 3-6 and second 2-6. I saw a lot of potential though. Georgia Williamson played a great first match of high school, but came out on the losing side of a 1-6, 6-3, 2-6 match. Madison Wells and Sydney Wells played well together for their first time, but lost 1-6, 1-6. Erica Plutat and Gabriella Matly played a wonderful first set, but lost 5-7, 3-6. Overall, I was pleased with the Varsity’s focus, effort, attitude, and drive. Even though we lost, we have a lot to take from this match. 1. We are tough. 2. We are a good team, we just need to adjust some things to get the win.

 

Junior Varsity took the match last night 4-1. I think a lot of these girls surprised themselves, but they didn’t surprise me. I knew they had what it took, and they went out and fought like champs after being bundled up for an hour before, cheering on their Varsity team mates!

Megan Floyd lost 3-8, but I saw a lot of points that were well played. Kady Whitehead took it to her opponent 8-2 and didn’t let up. Marlee Thomas, in a fantastic first match, won 8-7 (7-0) For those of you new to tennis. She had to play a tiebreaker and won the tiebreaker in 7 straight points. That is incredibly rare. Jenna Miller and Dulce Amayun won 8-2 in a great match. Kaley Hopper and Rachel Baker put their foot down and won 8-1. I was very proud of the J/V for staying focused, working so hard, communicating well if they were doubles, and having a great attitude.

 

Ethan worked hard as our manager, and Christy was great in her first match coaching!

 

Lydia, Brooke, Anna, and Addison didn’t get to play tonight, but they were such great encouragers of their team tonight and troopers with the weather.

 

It’s only the beginning. Next week is when the real fun begins, with 3-5 matches from here on out the rest of the season. (No, I’m not joking.)

 

Well, that’s all for now. I am off to practice at 8 a.m. because the girls wanted to switch practice time from 1-3 to 8 so they could go to breakfast after. Hahaha

 

They are such a great group of girls, and I am thankful for the opportunity to coach them!

Match 4/12 to Northfield

Weather for today is forecast to be no higher than 49 and windy. As of now, we are still playing. The girls will need to come with gloves, hats, blankets, sweats, etc. (especially for when they are not playing)

Bus takes off at 3:35. Scheduled start time 4:30 for Varsity. Will let you know any new info as soon as I know it.

4/11 match

Just got word that match is now postponed, date TBD. Will let you know when I do. Thanks! Girls will wear black skirt tomorrow, with purple uniform top. We will leave from the tennis courts at 3:35 to go to Northfieldh (Wabash). There is no activity planned for tonight, so they should go home after school.
